"I've got an iPhone 11 with a cracked screen — is it worth fixing or should I just get a new one?" We have that conversation at the counter five or ten times a week. Here's the shop-floor answer — when an older iPhone is genuinely worth repairing, and when we tell customers to walk away.
First check: is it still supported by iOS?
The iOS support cutoff is the first thing we check, because a phone with no security updates is a liability regardless of how fixable the hardware is. As of 2026:
- iPhone XS, XR and newer — still receiving iOS updates. Worth repairing if the hardware makes sense.
- iPhone 8, 8 Plus, X — stuck on iOS 16. Still work, still run apps, but no more security patches. We'll repair them, but we'll flag the limitation.
- iPhone 7 and older — unsupported. Repair only if you want it for a specific function (second phone, kids' device, car use).
If you're buying a screen repair for a phone that'll lose all software support in twelve months, we'll tell you. That's the kind of conversation we'd rather have before you commit than after.
The maths: screen swap vs. new phone
Rough numbers for the most common repair (screen replacement) against the used-phone market. Prices vary — these are indicative for Kent:
| iPhone model | Screen repair | Used replacement | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 11 | £65–85 | £180–250 | Repair, easy call |
| iPhone 12 | £85–120 | £250–330 | Repair |
| iPhone 13 | £110–150 | £330–430 | Repair |
| iPhone 14 | £140–180 | £450–550 | Repair |
| iPhone SE (2020/2022) | £55–75 | £120–180 | Marginal — judge on overall condition |
Put bluntly: for an iPhone 11 or newer, a screen repair costs a fraction of replacing the phone. We do this a lot — most people underestimate how much life an older iPhone still has.
Battery replacement is even better value
A new battery is the single biggest quality-of-life improvement you can make to an older iPhone. At £45–65 for most models, it takes a phone that dies by 3pm and gives you back a full-day device. If you'd told yourself you needed to upgrade because the battery is shot — fit a new cell first. It'll surprise you.
We cover battery replacement on every iPhone model, most done in 30–45 minutes while you wait.
When we tell people NOT to repair
Not every older iPhone is worth fixing. The common cases where we'll tell you to walk away:
- Face ID broken on iPhone 11/12/13. Face ID modules are expensive and Apple's pairing has made third-party repairs less reliable. If the screen is fine but Face ID's dead, the repair cost often approaches half the phone's value.
- Logic-board faults on phones past iOS support. Investing £150 in board-level repair on an iPhone 7 that'll stop getting updates soon is rarely worth it.
- Multiple faults stacking up. Cracked screen + dead battery + charging port issue on an iPhone 8 — each fix is fine individually, but together they add up to more than a decent used iPhone 11.
- Back glass on certain models. iPhone 8 through 11 back glass is laminated to the frame — replacement means a full housing swap, which is labour-intensive. We'll do it, but we'll be honest about the cost.
- Water damage with visible corrosion on the main chip. Sometimes it's fixable, sometimes it's not — we'll open it up and tell you before you authorise anything.
The refurbished alternative
If the numbers don't work, we also sell refurbished iPhones — every one tested in our shop, battery health confirmed, warranty included. If you're trading a dead iPhone 8 for a working iPhone 12, that's often the sensible move. We'll give you a cash offer on the old one at the same time.
The environmental angle (briefly)
A phone that gets five more years out of a £65 repair instead of being traded for a new £900 device is, pound for pound, one of the best environmental decisions you can make as a consumer. Manufacturing a new phone accounts for the vast majority of its lifetime carbon footprint. Repair wins easily.
What to bring and what to expect
Bring the phone, the case (so we can check it fits after repair), and your Apple ID password if you have it (we sometimes need to test iCloud unlock post-repair). We'll:
- Assess the damage and check iOS support status.
- Give you a free, written quote before we start.
- Tell you honestly if we think you're throwing good money after bad.
- Fit the repair — most screens and batteries done same-day, often within the hour.
We're at 5 The Fairings, in Tenterden town centre, opposite the Waitrose car park. Walk in any time during shop hours or book a slot online. If you're driving in from further afield, have a look at our areas we serve page for drive times.
